Crumbs

What do you do with all of those heels and the last couple of slices of bread?  I've been throwing them into the freezer recently and yesterday I pulled them out and did something I've wanted to do for a long time - I made "fresh" bread crumbs.  It took about 90 seconds, all totaled, and I can't  wait to use them.  Maybe I'll add some dried herbs before I coat those extra thin chicken breasts I'm planning to lightly fry in olive oil.
Directions?  Rip bread into large pieces.  Place in food processor.  Pulse.  Done.  Satisfying to my cheapskate self and hopefully to the taste buds as well.  What are your thrifty kitchen tips?  Got some to share?

  1. I use bread ends for nice croutons, and then clean out the fridge w/ a soup of some kind. The croutons always dress up the soup a notch. After reading An Everlasting MEal, I began putting the onion peels/ carrot tips/ leek tops/ fresh herb shake into a freezer bag in the fridge, then make a mystery vegetable stock of sorts. Very good! You'd love that book. I blogged about it. http://www.newyorklostandfound.blogspot.com/2011/12/everlasting-meal.html

  2. Birds of a feather...except I eat the heels. I toasted a few slices yesterday to go into meatloaf tonight.

  3. So smart, Rachel! Although I keep an increasingly larger bag of shrimp shells in the freezer, it never occured to me to save veggie stuff. I'm on it.

John - thrifty is becoming my middle name. More $ for wine!

I do save my parmesan ends and add them to soups.
Having a guinea pig helps, she eats all matter of vegetable waste.
